The Purpose Behind the Event

"Making a Difference"
In May 2002 my son David Michalek age 9 was rushed to Mary Bridge
Childrens Hospital where he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer,
Ewings Sarcoma, and a tumor attached to his ribs had collapsed his lung.
David was in big trouble. However, doctors and staff were quick to map
out immediate treatment and care plan for David. It was a whirlwind of
shock and emotions leaving us with many questions that were answered
honestly by Doctors and staff. From that day forward, our lives changed.
It was our first day at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital, and I knew the
finest team of doctors, nurses and staff was going to make a huge impact
on our lives. The best choice I could have ever made was for David to
receive his care from Mary Bridge.
I was immediately informed of all the tasks and procedures that were
necessary in order to save David’s life, and someone was there every
step of the way to help from counseling, to group parent meetings, and
support from all angles. They trained my husband and I to care for David
at home in-between chemo therapy treatments at the hospital. They
educated us about all the tricks and helpful hints to regaining David’s
strength and appetite after Chemo. This was an 11-month treatment plan
and I could not imagine how I ever could have got through it with out
the Team at Mary Bridge. I had to make it my life no matter what, and
they made sure I had all the tools I needed to fight the battle.
Having a Hospital that truly cares for our kids just like they care for
there own makes the difference. I Must say through it all many many
tears were shed, but the Staff at Mary Bridge made a point to make sure
the smiles and good times out numbered the bad, and for that I would
like to say THANK YOU! Words cannot express my gratitude. I know I speak
for many parents whom you have helped.
